Could your soap be hurting you? - Jade Edwards

Soap, shampoo, lip chap and body wash, things we use on a daily basis could all contain the dangerous chemical cocamide DEA. This “dangerous” chemical consists of coconut oil, used for its moisturizing ability and DEA, added to make our products foamy and sudsy. The chemical DEA could be causing cancer. Wait, cancer? Hardly anything can cause cancer, right?
Although high doses of the chemical caused cancer in mice, we are rarely exposed to high levels of DEA in our everyday lives. Shampoo and soaps are all washed down the drain after only a few seconds on our bodies so the risk is minimal.
What we should be concerned about is that soap, the one you rinse off after using, that soap that is swirling around the drain, getting into our water supply and into our rivers. The Danish Environmental Protection Agency classified the compound as hazardous to the environment and toxic to aquatic life. That’s what we should be worried about, not ourselves
If you are concerned about cocamide DEA than the best way to protect yourself and the environment is to always read the ingredients list on all your products. Some great companies to buy from are The Honest Company, Intelligent Nutrient and John Masters Bare.
